Using NexisUni

NexisUni is an aggregator of news and other information sources.  An aggregator brings together news from multiple presses. 

  • In NexisUni, you can narrow news results to show from a specific region. It includes Western and African press coverage. 
  • Coverage is current and will not generally be older than the 1980s or 1990s.

Recommendation: Start with Finding News from an African Press

  1. Open Nexis Uni.
  2. At the Guided Search, enter your keywords at "Search in all News for ..." 
    • Sample Search: (migration OR immigration OR mobility) AND Africa

  1. You can "Choose data range" at this point or at the search results page.
  2. At the search results page, click "On" next to "Group Duplicates". This is found at the top of the search results list.
  3. At the left filters, click on "Sources". Click on"Africa News".

Even with this filter, you will find items published in Washington, D.C., Brussels etc. Still take note of where the news is originating from.  There is also a filter under Sources for AllAfrica Web Publications but this also have a mixture of presses.  They are not all generated from African presses.

  1. At the filter, click on "Timeline". Use the slider or enter dates and click "OK" to narrow the dates.

Note: You may have to confirm who is authoring a news piece. For example, what is Africa Renewal?

According to Wikipedia, Africa Renewal is a magazine published by the United Nations. This would be considered a western perspective.
