Looking for U.S. Federal Data?

The End of Term Web Archive captures and saves U.S. Government websites at the end of presidential administrations. The ETWA contains federal government websites (.gov, .mil, etc) in the Legislative, Executive, or Judicial branches of the government. Websites that were at risk of changing (i.e., whitehouse.gov) or disappearing altogether during government transitions were captured. Local government websites, or any other site not part of the federal government domain were out of scope.

The Presidential Libraries maintain over 600 million pages of textual materials; nearly 20 million photographs; over 20 million feet of motion picture film; nearly 100,000 hours of disc, audiotape, and videotape recordings; over 500 TB of electronic data, and close to 750,000 museum objects. These varied holdings make each library a rich source of information and a center for research on the Presidency.

In January 2025, the White House website was archived as a way to preserve the online presence of the administration of President Joseph R. Biden Jr. The official files that make up a Presidential administration's website are preserved in the National Archives’ Executive Office of the President Electronic Records Archive. In order for the public to easily access the websites, the National Archives has taken an additional step to "freeze" the websites and make them available online. Because the archived websites are hosted by the National Archives and are historical material, they are no longer updated. Any broken links (internal or external) will not be updated.

In January 2021, the White House website was archived as a way to preserve the online presence of the administration of President Donald J. Trump. Additionally, the following websites have also been archived: Be Best Initiative, Artificial Intelligence for the American People, Coronavirus Disease 2019, Opioids: the Crisis Next Door, We the People Petitions, and Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative.

In January 2017, the White House website was archived as a way to preserve the online presence of the administration of President Barack Obama. The websites for Mrs. Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative, the We The People Petitions, and the White House Data Catalog (open.whitehouse.gov) were also preserved. These websites are historical material “frozen in time.” They are no longer updated, and links to external websites and some internal pages will not work. The official files making up the websites are archived in NARA’s Electronic Records Archives (ERA). However, the website interface and functionality is preserved for easy use by the public through this portal. Archived websites are an excellent resource for photographs, speeches, press releases, digital data, and other public domain records of the Obama Presidency from 2009–2017.
