Greetings, Spring 2025 Students!

This guide includes resources to support your Capstone course for Sociology 191. The theme of the course focuses on U.S. undergraduates and their success. This page contains some pre-work including 1) a link to the "Using Sociological Abstracts" tutorial 2) the "Introduction to ASA Style Tutorial", and 3) information about downloading and installing the campus VPN.

Instructions

1. Connect to the campus network via the VPN if you are off-campus.  You will need this connection to access one or more library databases while taking the tutorial.

2. Take the short quiz at the end of the tutorial.  Enter your email address AND your professor's email address. Afterwards locate the email confirmation. These emails often go to your SPAM folder, so be sure to check there.  It is often easiest to search in your email account for the phrase "Results for Using Sociological Abstracts" to find your email confirmation.

An Intro to ASA Style

Welcome to a quick tutorial on attribution and citation in American Sociological Association Style (7th edition) for Sociology. This tutorial is a brief introduction to the practices of attribution, citation, in ASA style. It should take you approximately 15 minutes.

This tutorial is intended as an introduction to ASA style only. ASA style is more fully explained in the ASA Style Guide, which you can find via UC Merced Library Search:

Learning Objectives

As a result of completing this tutorial, you should be able to:

  • Distinguish between attribution and citation
  • Identify why we as scholars and students cite the work of others
  • Recognize the main parts of an ASA 5th edition reference for journal articlesbooks, and edited book chapters
