UROC Summer Undergraduate Research Institute Library Guide

Orientation Instructions & Pre-Work (~25 minutes)

UC Merced Librarians are looking forward to meeting you all for this year's SURI Library Orientation! This orientation is a fast-paced, active training so we are asking you to prepare by registering for sessions and completing some work ahead of time.

 Instructions

  1. Watch the SURI Library Orientation Video.
  2. Select & register for the sessions you would like to attend by Monday, June 5th. Click the session title in the schedule below to see details and access RSVP links.   
    1. Choose 1 session per block. There are 3 blocks.
  3. Create an account and download tools for your citation manager session by Monday June 5th.
  4. Create a Research Rabbit account if you are attending the Citation Networks session. 
  5. Complete the Searching in Library Database Module

You are expected to have a citation manager account and associated tools downloaded for your preferred tool prior to the Library Orientation.

Mendeley

Not sure which session to attend? See the guidance below, ask your faculty mentor, or visit Choosing a Citation Management Tool

RefWorks: web-based tool; no software download required.

  • Access provided by the UC Merced Library.
  • May have previously used for coursework.

Zotero: web-based and desktop tool; download required to access full functionality.

  • Primarily used in humanities, such as history, etc.  
  • Works well with numbered citation styles.
  • Open Source tool.

Mendeley: web-based and desktop tool; download required to access full functionality.

  • Primarily used in natural sciences, such as biology, etc. 

If attending the Finding Sources through Citation Networks (aka Scholarship is Connected) session, create a ResearchRabbit account in advance. Click Log In to access the Sign Up button.

ResearchRabbit is a literature mapping tool. We will add article citations to ResearchRabbit to locate related articles and to explore author connections.

The Searching in Library Databases Module is a quick introduction (or review!) to using keywords and combining keywords to search library databases.

Click on the session title to view the session description and RSVP. 

You will complete 3 RVSP forms (one for each session.) Due to room seat limitations, please attend the sessions you registered.

  • Can't get into a Block 2 session? See if there is room in Block 3. 

You will receive a confirmation email from the LibCal system for each session that includes a cancellation option.

  • If you want to switch your sessions, cancel your RSVP and register for the new session.

Post-Orientation Survey: Questions to Consider

We are asking for your feedback about this orientation through a short survey, to be completed at the end of your 3rd session. As you attend sessions this morning, keep these questions in mind: 

What did you learn today that you didn’t know before? Of the information presented today, what do you envision using in your research? Are there additional topics you wish were included? What do you think of the orientation format?
