How Do I Use Methodology Limiters?

The following are some examples of databases that allow you to filter results by original (empirical) and review articles. Not every database will have this option, however, by reading the abstract, you will be able to tell which articles are original (empirical) and which are reviews.

PubMed

Use the Article Types limiter to narrow to specific types of articles. Click on customize for more options, including specific types of empirical articles, such as clinical trials.

Google Scholar

  • To find review articles, enter your search terms AND review.
    • Example: sleep AND college AND review
  • Look at article to make sure it is a review.
  • When a PDF is not available, click More to see the UC-eLinks button.

PsycInfo & PsycArticles

Use the Methodology limiter to narrow to empirical study (original research).

You may also want to try clinical case study, clinical trial, or treatment outcome depending on your topic.

Use the Document Types limiter to narrow to Articles.

  • Click on Advanced Search.
  • Enter your search terms.
  • Select Research article.
