Writing in the Arts

The Boston Globe

The Boston Globe is available through the Factiva Access newspaper database.

Factiva's market tends to be focused more on the private center (businesses) than education and this influences the ease of use and settings.  Note: The default setting is to pull news from the last 3 months only.

Obtain articles written by Sebastian Smee.

Search Strategy #1: set of 500+ articles

Instructions:

  • Click on Factiva Access. (Available in the database listing.)
  • Type the following in the search box:  by=sebastian smee
    • by (byline) is used to search the author field in Factiva
  • Click Options and change the Date Range to "In the last 5 years"
  • Scroll down the left hand menu, and under Sources, click on The Boston Globe

This direct link should take you back to this list of results; however, you have to still be logged into Factiva first (which I think is very strange & inconvenient).

Search Strategy #2: set of 600+ articles

  • Click on Factiva Access. (Available in the database listing.)
  • Search for an article by him with his name. e.g. "the art of scandal" smee
  • Click on the article title.
  • Click on Sebastian Smee (hyperlinked name) underneath the article title.
  • At the pop-up window, click "See articles by this author".
  • Now there is a list of 1000+ articles since it defaults to all dates at this point due to the author search.
  • You can change the date limit in the drop-down menu to "In the last 5 years".
  • Using the left hand limiters, you can limit to The Boston Globe which removes ~50 articles.

This direct link should take you back to the set of results.  Again, you have to be in Factiva first.

PDFs of Articles Available

  • A page of articles in the search results can be saved as a single PDF document (which may or may not be useful).  The PDF download icon allows you to download Headline, Article, and TOC.
  • You can also select a single article at a time and make it a PDF.

The New Yorker

The New Yorker is available or indexed through a few databases.  However, the coverage may vary.  Here are a couple good options.

Option 1: through Academic Search Complete

Access The New Yorker in Academic Search Complete (ASC).  ASC appears to have the most recent coverage.  The database will not include images from The New Yorker.

Search

  • A search option is available at the left "Search in this publication".

Browse

  • Content is browseable by clicking on the dates found on the right hand side of the page.

Option 2: through Newsbank

Access The New Yorker in Newsbank Access World News.  It appears to be about a month behind in coverage.  The database will not include images from The New Yorker.

Search

  • You can search in The New Yorker using the search boxes at the top of the page.

Browse

  • You can browse content by clicking on the hyperlinked numbers in the calendar.
