• Rise of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, ocean acidification, and terrestrial responses
• Impacts of legacy mining in developed countries, and of artisanal and small-scale mining in developing countries
• Hydraulic fracturing ("fracking"), petroleum recovery, and environmental impacts of carbon-based fuels
