Boolean Logic

AND, OR

Join together search terms in a logical manner.

AND : narrows searches, used to join dissimilar terms
OR : broadens searches, used to join similar terms

Examples:

#1
migrant* AND "climate change"

#2
“climate change” OR “global warming”

Phrase Searching & Truncation

" " , *

To search for specific phrases, enclose them in quotation marks. The database will search for those words together in that order.

Examples:

"environmental migrants"

“climate change"

To search for variations of a word, add the symbol for truncation, usually a * where you want to allow for variation.

Examples:

migrat* = migrate, migrating, migration, migrated, etc.

environm* = environment, environmental, environmentalism, etc.

Check Your Understanding

Let's say you are writing about environmental migrants and displacement.
