Reviewing Search Strategies

Let's review how we can use different search strategies to help narrow down our searches. 

Boolean Logic/ Logical Operators

We can use AND / OR to join search terminology.

  • OR - joins similar terms / terms that get at the same issue - BROADENS
  • AND - joins dissimilar terms - NARROWS

Phrase Searching

You can also search for a specific phrase with "quotation marks ".  Most databases will recognize the using of quotation marks to search for two or more words together in the same order.

Truncation & Wild Cards

Search for alternate forms of a work by truncating it and adding an asterisk *. For example: Med* searches for Medical, Medicine, Meditate, Mediate...
