Hi, CRES 110!

I'm looking forward to our lesson on Thursday, Sept. 20. Be prepared for a couple of activities, including some small group work.

Because everyone has had a different experience when it comes to conducting scholarly research, there are some basics I'd like everyone to review prior to our short lesson later this month. Some of this may already be familiar to many of you, but some of it may be new to others.

The pre-work and quiz should take ~20-30 minutes and can be found in the Complete Before Class on 9/20 tab. Here is the recommended order:

  • Watch the "What's the Deep Web? Why the Library?" video to learn why your professors ask that you use databases and how the library provides access to this content
  • Set up the VPN to access databases off campus
  • Watch the UCeLinks video to learn how to access the full-text of articles or submit a request to receive materials from other libraries
  • Watch the "Online Research: Tips for Effective Search Strategies" video to refresh your memory about constructing a search using Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), truncation, and quotation marks
