AIP Style
Overall Format
- superscript numbers refer to references/footnotes at end of paper
References are ...
- consecutively numbered in the text and then in the references; they are not listed alphabetically
- numbered with superscript arabic numerals; superscript numerals come after commas, periods, quotation marks, colons and semicolons
- listed double-spaced at end of paper; each one is indented on the first line
- listed as superscript numerals or in [brackets]
Reference Elements & Conventions
- Author's name to appear in the form on the work; often initials and then last name
- If more than four authors, use et al., after name of the first author
- Abbreviate journal names with standard abbreviations (see Appendix G for journal titles & abbreviations, pg. 46-54)
- Follow the journal name with volume number, first page number, and year of publication
- Include the issue IF the journal is not paginated consecutively through volumes e.g. each issue is starting with page 1
- Volume number is bolded
Other:
- If you refer to an author(s) in the text, do so by last name only.

Note: Some examples have full first name and last name, but most use initials for the first and middle names.
General Format:
Author, "Article title." Journal Title abbreviated. Volume, Starting Page Number (Year of Publication).

Alternative Format for AIP (not superscript numbers)
- Citations are in text with author’s last name and year
- References are at the end in alphabetical order
