Anthropology 131 (Moyes): Developing Search Terms

Search Terms: Natural Places

Besides searching for the topic, Natural Places, what are other terms you can search for? What are some broader terms, narrower terms, or related terms? Think of words from any readings you have done so far, or take a look at Wikipedia or in Credo Reference for some context.

How to Choose Keywords

Brainstorming Keywords

Not all authors use the same language to describe similar topics, so you will need to try a variety of searches in databases.

  • Identify the key concepts of your topic.
  • Next, create a list of synonyms or related words for each concept. Think of words that would actually appear in a book or article.
  • Stick to using 2-4 keywords at a time when searching.

Example: What are the interpretations of paleolithic art?

  • interpretations --> criticism, history, meaning, etc.
  • "paleolithic art" --> "cave paintings", "cave art" , "rock art", etc.
