About RefWorks

RefWorks is subscription tool that the library pays for. All UC Merced students, faculty and staff can create an account. RefWorks helps you:

  • Export citations from library databases and websites
  • Generate in-text citations
  • Create bibliographies
  • Share references with others
  • Communicate with software like Microsoft Word

RefWorks Overview

About:

  • Online only (no desktop software)
  • Subscribed to by the UC Merced Library
  • Can create own account OR set-up with single sign-on
  • Using latest version (blue not orange) https://refworks.proquest.com/

Features:

  • Tools include "Save to RefWorks" bookmarklet (capture web pages) and Word Add-In or Google Doc Add-In  to write and cite
  • Allows sharing at three levels (Can read, Can annotate, Can modify)
  • Allowing attaching / dragging in PDFs; often metadata is extracted from PDFs
  • Allows for annotating documents; however documents will print "clean"
  • Citations in main window can be viewed in four ways: Normal, table, full, and citation.  Use citation view to change "Citation Style".
  • Citation Style Editor (under "Create Bibliography") allows customization to a citation style.
  • Online only feature eliminates syncing issues
  • Likely thousands of styles

Limitations:

  • CSL styles may be more accurate than non-CSL styles.
  • Footnotes/Endnotes require using Word functionality to choose footnote/endnote before inserting the citation.
  • Speed may sometimes be an issue
  • Recommendation to upload single documents at a time
