What Am I Really Sharing?

Extracting EXIF information from online images

You can get EXIF information from images that you find online as well as images that you take yourself or receive from friends.

To do this:

  • Right click on an image
  • Select "Save Image As"
  • Open image on your desktop
  • On a Mac: Under "Tools", select "Show Inspector"; On a PC, right-click the file, select "Properties" > "Details"
  • You will see some stored information about the image

Try it out!

What information do you see?

To see more information about this image, we can use an online EXIF viewer (Google "EXIF viewer" to see some options)

This will give you even more information about the image.

Removing EXIF data from images you share online

You may not want to share photos that include a lot of EXIF data, especially if you want to keep locations private.

Most social networks, including Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter remove location data when you upload photos, but information will still be available if you email someone a photo, for example, or if you save it in the cloud.

Here are some links to information about removing EXIF data. Note: you may need to use an app.
