Search Strategies

Generating Keywords

As you read, what place, people, activities, themes, and issues are surfaced?  Consider using these terms in searching for books or articles.

Examples:

"forensic anthropologist", bones, "tooth fragment", "crime scene", etc.

Phrase Searching

To search for specific phrases, enclose them in quotation marks. The database will search for those words together in that order.

Examples:

“forensic science”

"age at death"

"hand stencil"

Boolean Operators (AND/OR)

 

AND, OR

Join together search terms in a logical manner.

AND - narrows searches, used to join dissimilar terms

Truncation

 

TRUNCATION

Truncate a word in order to search for different forms of the same word. Many database use the asterisk * as the truncation symbol.

Examples:

Truncate the word forens* and you will search for forensic, forensics

Add the truncation symbol to the word anthropolog* to search for anthropology, anthropologist, anthropological,  etc.
