Government resources

The following is a list of federal and state agencies that offer statistics on prison populations. It is by no means a comprehensive list. If you'd like to find additional sources, please make an appointment with Olivia.

FEDERAL RESOURCES

Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS): Corrections

BJS: Survey of Sexual Victimization

U. S. Federal Bureau of Prisons: Statistics

National Institute of Corrections Library

STATE/CALIFORNIA RESOURCES

California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation: Office of Research

California Criminal Justice Statistics Center

Nonprofits and advocacy groups

Many nonprofits acquire their statistics from the government agencies listed above. The value of nonprofit reports is that they usually present those statistics in easy-to-read reports that are more accessible than the raw data offered by government agencies. Nonprofits also use data to argue particular points or issues, which, depending on your own research, may be of greater value to you than raw data.

The Sentencing Project: Incarcerated Women & Girls

Prison Policy Initiative: California profile

California Coalition for Women Prisoners
