WRI 30 (Silbaugh): Welcome!

Class goals

By the end of this session, you should be able to:

  • Use UC Library Search to find books on product development and marketing;
  • Use IBISWorld to find industry profiles; and
  • Use Nexis Uni to find company information.

Writing for business

The assignment for this class is a bit unusual in that it requires that you find information of a very specific sort: to wit, basic business information. Business research is unlike research in other disciplines in that it requires that you find information in very specialized databases, and yet additional and valuable information may be found in general databases as well.

This class will focus on specific business databases and one large, general database: Academic Search Complete. You'll use Academic Search Complete to get a large-scale picture of the industry within which your proposed product will be brought to market, and specialized business databases like IBISWorld and Nexis Uni to find more specific information about the industry, the companies operating within it, and the consumers who will be your potential customers.
