File Types

What are file types?

Electronic file types are the "packages" that hold information. Common file types are word documents (.doc or .docx), portable document formats (.pdf), powerpoints (.ppt), MPEG Layer-4 Audio (.mp4), executable files (.exe), hypertext markup language (.html) etc. The file type does not determine the information type. For example an article pdf could come from a popular magazine or a scholarly journal.
