Writing 10 (Ruiz): Welcome

Reading & Composition

What has been challenging about your research so far?

In assigned groups of four, discuss issues you are facing with your research. What has been challenging? What do you foresee as challenges?

  • Select someone in your group to list challenges on your sticky note.
  • Select someone in your group to share with the class.

We will focus on these challenges in class today.

Spreadsheet

We will be using an editable spreadsheet throughout our lesson today. You can locate the spreadsheet for your class below, but I will also have these linked on the pages where we'll need the class spreadsheet.

  • select databases based on your field of inquiry and the type of information you need
  • use keywords and other search strategies to get the most out of your search results

Hello

Hi WRI 10 students,

I'm looking forward to our session next week. This guide will have more available on it next week. To help you prepare for your lesson and learning activities, there are a few things I'd like for you to do in advance of our class.

  • Download the VPN to your computer or other web-enabled device, so you can have access to library databases off-campus. If you have trouble with the VPN, you can also bring your laptop to IT Express, which is located on the second floor of the library at the Library Services Desk. (See Accessing Information tab)
  • Watch the short UC-eLinks video to learn how to how to get the full-text of an article when you don't see a PDF. (See Accessing Information tab)
  • Explore how to make an appointment with a librarian with our new easy-to-use calendar. We also have a 24/7 chat service that is staffed by IRL librarians. We double-check every UC Merced question that comes through the chat during the next business day. (See Getting Help tab)

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you next week! If you have any questions, email me at ldavis23@ucmerced.edu or call/text my office cell at 209.285.7742.
