Information for Writing Faculty

Independent Tour:

The UC Merced Library offers an independent Library Tour on mobile devices to introduce Writing 1 and Writing 10 students to the library.

Students can check out an iPad Mini at the 2nd floor Library Services Desk. They can also use their own mobile device to access the Tour by using either the Tour QR code, or the Tour URL, which is

There is a paper tour available at the 2nd floor Services Desk in case of technology issues.

follow-up survey assignment is available online for students (6 questions including a validation code students will receive at the end of the tour).  


Writing Faculty

  • include the Library Tour and related assignment as a course requirement
  • assign students a due date by which to complete the Library Tour and related assignment (by March 16, 2018)
  • access and download student survey participation scores online 



  • may take the tour beginning January 16, 2018 through March 16, 2018.
  • check-out an iPad mini from the Library Services Desk OR use their own mobile devices to access the Tour
  • complete and submit the follow-up survey assignment for class credit
  • receive email confirmation of survey assignment completion

Why the Tour?

Librarians have implemented library instruction via a tour for incoming Writing students because

  • the content is well-suited for a self-pace independent tour, for example, learn about the space while navigating the space
  • it is an an active form of instruction using mobile devices
  • it clearly distinguishes an introductory form of library instruction from future library research instruction sessions
  • it provides a common, consistent message for incoming freshmen
  • it is a scalable format for introducing students to the library space, services, and resources


Library Staff

  • monitor tour and survey assignment submissions
  • assist students and faculty as needed
  • gather assessment data and report findings

Download Student Assignment Results

Since students identify their instructor and Writing course / section when they log in to take the Library Tour survey assignment, you have access to their assignment results. 


To retrieve the results, please follow these instructions.




  • Click on the Download Survey Assignment Results link
  • Click the "Log In" button.
  • You will be re-directed to a single sign-on page (unless you are already authenticated).  Log in with your UCMnetID and password.
  • You will see an HTML list of your students' results.
  • Look for the spreadsheet icon below this HTML list (bottom left).
  • Click on the icon to download the spreadsheet (.csv) file of results.
  • The spreadsheet will include student email, course & section, and date completed

Note: Since students need to demonstrate their understanding of Library services and spaces in order to complete the Tour, the survey assignment asks them to reflect on what they learned. Completion of each question will result in full credit.
